The Institute of Population, Health and Development (PHAD) in collaboration with The General Office for Population and Family Planning (GOPFP), Ministry of Health, Viet Nam, United Nation Population Fund (UNFPA), and the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) conducted a workshop on Aging Population and Health: The Longitudinal Study and the Role of Population Collaborators in Community Based Care for Older People on 12 December 2019 in Hanoi.
One of the workshop’s contents is sharing key findings of the baseline survey of the Longitudinal Study of Aging and Health in Vietnam (LSAHV). The study is conducted by PHAD in 2018 with funding from ERIA. Total 6,050 people 60 and over representing 10 provinces of Vietnam participated in the study.
According to Professor Yasuhiko Saito, Nihon University, Japan, evidence-based data is important factor to support policy makers be able to formulate effective policies for older adults in the country.
In the workshop, Dr. Vu Cong Nguyen, a country PI of the study, shared key finding of the study such as health status, diseases as well as healthcare needs of the elderly. The results showed that arthritis, chronic pain back and hypertension are most popular diseases of old people. In which, hypertension control should be paid attention to reduce the serious consequences of the disease. In addition, more than 80% old people is living with relatives however about 2% received aging care training. This suggests that this is a major health care constraint for the elderly that the government needs to consider to improve the quality of home-based care.
