The Institute of Population, Health and Development (PHAD) continues to cooperate with Nihon University, Japan to conduct a longitudinal study on Aging and Health in Vietnam with funding from the Economic Research Institute of Southeast Asia and East Asia (ERIA). This study aims to 1) describe the health status of the elderly in Vietnam; 2) Exploring the health status of the elderly in Vietnam; 3) Exploring changes in health status of the elderly conducted in this study and cross-sectional studies conducted in Vietnam; 4) Exploring changes in the health status of the elderly through longitudinal studies in Vietnam; 5) Exploring the potential determinants of changes in the health status of the elderly in Vietnam; and 6) Estimating health expectations by gender, place of residence (urban/rural), and education level to explore inequalities among aging populations in Vietnam.
In round 1, a total of 6,050 elderly people aged 60 years and over representing 10 provinces of 6 ecological regions of Vietnam were randomly selected to participate in the study. The first round of the study was conducted in 2018-2019. From December 2022 to July 2023, PHAD Institute continued to collect data for the second round. Our researchers returned home exactly 6,050 elderly people who had participated since round 1 to continue to examine the changes in their health indicators after more than 4 years. The second round of survey activities was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. We also added questions to assess the impact of the Covid19 epidemic on the health of the elderly.
In this second survey round, the Institute of Population, Health and Development (PHAD) collaborated with the Department of Health, the Population Sub-Department, the Statistics Office, Universities and Colleges, and research institutes in the 10 provinces of the study to conduct the second round of the Longitudinal Study on Aging and Health in Vietnam (LSAHV) from December 2022 to July 2023. In each province, we organized a 2-day training course for enumerators to interview and measure health indicators. It is expected that the report of round 2 results will be announced at the end of December, 2023
